What does a Hyrox event typically consist of:
8km Run: The race starts with a 1km run, followed by a functional exercise station. This sequence is repeated eight times.
8 Functional Stations: The exercises are consistent at every Hyrox event, ensuring a level playing field for all competitors
The Exercises:
-
1km SkiErg: Simulates cross-country skiing, working your upper body and core.
-
50m Sled Push: Push a weighted sled across the floor.
-
50m Sled Pull: Pull the same weighted sled back to the starting point.
-
80m Burpee Broad Jumps: A combination of a burpee and a broad jump, testing your explosive power.
-
1km Rowing: Another cardio-focused exercise, working your entire body.
-
200m Kettlebell Farmer's Carry: Carry heavy kettlebells in each hand while walking.
-
100m Sandbag Lunges: Walking lunges while holding a heavy sandbag.
-
100 Wall Balls: Throw a weighted ball against a target overhead.
What are the most common injuries sustained during Hyrox events?
1. Overuse Injuries
-
Tendinopathies: These are common due to the repetitive nature of the exercises and the high volume of training. Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy (knee), and rotator cuff tendinopathy (shoulder) are frequently seen.
-
Shin splints: The repetitive running between stations can lead to shin splints, especially if athletes aren't used to that volume of running or have poor running mechanics.
-
Plantar fasciitis: This is another foot issue that can arise from the running component, causing pain in the heel and arch of the foot.
2. Muscle Strains and Tears
-
Hamstring strains: These can occur during the running portions, especially with the explosive movements and changes of pace.
-
Quadriceps strains: Similar to hamstring strains, these can happen during running or exercises like lunges.
-
Lower back pain and strains: The sledge push and pull, kettlebell carries, and sandbag lunges can put a lot of stress on the lower back, leading to pain and muscle strains.
3. Joint Pain and Sprains
-
Knee pain: This is very common due to high-impact exercises like burpee broad jumps and lunges, as well as the repetitive nature of the sledge push and pull.
-
Ankle sprains: These can occur during the running portions or from awkward landings during exercises.
-
Shoulder pain: The SkiErg, rowing, and wall balls can put stress on the shoulder joint, leading to pain and potential sprains.
4. Other Injuries
-
Blisters: These are common due to the running and friction from equipment.
-
Chafing: This can occur from repetitive movements and sweat, especially in areas where clothing rubs against the skin.
-
Dehydration: Hyrox events are intense and can last a long time, so dehydration is a risk if athletes don't drink enough fluids.
Injury Prevention Strategies
-
Proper training: Follow a well-structured training plan that gradually increases intensity and includes adequate rest days.
-
Focus on technique: Learn the correct form for each exercise and consider working with a coach to improve your technique.
-
Warm-up and cool-down: Always warm up before the event with dynamic stretches and cool down afterwards with static stretches.
-
Listen to your body: Pay attention to any pain or discomfort and don't push through it. Rest and seek medical attention if needed.
-
Use proper equipment: Wear appropriate shoes and consider using supportive gear like knee sleeves or wrist wraps.
-
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after the event.
What medical facilities are at Hyrox events:
Each event has first aid available during the event, both inside and outside of the Roxzone in case of an emergency.
When signing up for a Hyrox event you will have to sign a wavier, as part of the wavier there is a first aid section:
I consent to the provision of first aid and other medical treatment in the event of injury or illness (including but not limited to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automated external defibrillator) and hereby exonerate the organizer and release them from any liability or claims arising from such treatments. I am aware that I can withdraw from the event at any time for my protection and the protection of others.
