Wing Foiling
Wing Foiling is a wind-propelled water sport developed from Kitesurfing, Windsurfing and Surfing.
The sailor, standing on a board, holds directly onto a wing. It generates both upward force and sideways speed and thus moves the board across the water. This young sport is poised to become very popular.
Planning Your Trip
- Wind and Water Conditions: Wing foiling requires consistent wind and flat water for beginners. Ideal destinations have reliable side onshore winds (wind blowing parallel to the shore) and sheltered bays or lagoons. Popular locations include the Caribbean, Mediterranean, South Asia and North America.
- Booking: Popular wing foiling schools and camps fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Book well in advance, particularly for private lessons.
- Instruction: For beginners, professional instruction is crucial for safety and proper technique. Look for reputable schools or camps with certified instructors.
- Gear: Some schools offer equipment rentals, but some may require you to have your wing, foil, and board. Check with the school or camp beforehand.
- Travel Logistics: Consider factors like flight options, accommodation proximity to the foiling spot, and transportation to and from the beach.
Safety First
- Lessons and Certification: Don't attempt to wing foil on your own, especially as a beginner. Take lessons from a qualified instructor to learn proper techniques and safety protocols.
- Wind & Water Conditions: Always assess wind and water conditions before heading out. Never foil in offshore winds or water with strong currents or waves (until you are very experienced).
- Fitness: Wing foiling requires good balance and core strength. Be prepared for a physical workout, especially during your initial learning stages.
- Water Safety Gear: Always wear a life jacket, helmet, and leash when wing foiling.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Keep an eye out for other water users and potential hazards like boats, swimmers, or underwater obstacles.
