Before You Go
- Please discuss your travel plans with your doctor and get their advice about managing your migraines while abroad. Depending on where you will be travelling, they may suggest changes to your medication.
- Carry your medication in your hand luggage if your checked-in luggage is lost. Ensure you have enough medication and take some extra in case of delays.
- Be aware of your specific Migraine triggers, such as stress, dehydration, lack of sleep and changes in altitude or barometric pressure.
Whilst Abroad
- Dehydration is a common trigger for those who have migraines. So make sure you have plenty of water during your trip.
- Jet lag can trigger migraines. Avoid long naps during the day and establish a regular sleep routine.
- Manage your stress and find healthy ways, such as medication and exercise.
- Skipping meals or eating unhealthy food can trigger migraines. Pack healthy snacks and eat at regular meal times.
- Bring items that can help with migraine triggers, such as notice deduction headphones, an eye mask, earplugs, and essential oils.
Additional Tips
- Look for hotels and apartments with blackout curtains and air conditioning.
- Build in rest days during your trip so you don't overdo yourself.
- Be prepared to change your itinerary if you need to recover from a migraine incident.
- If you are travelling with others, please inform them about your migraines so they can help if you have an incident.
