Travel Advice
- Discuss your travel plans with your doctor and get their approval to travel. They might be able to advise you of any triggers to avoid and medications you need to take with you.
- Pack enough gout medication for the entire trip with some extra in case of delays. You will need to have easy access, so keep them with you in hand luggage.
- Consider compression socks; these can help with circulation and reduce swelling in your feet.
- Pack comfortable shoes. Avoid high heels with narrow toes.
Whilst Travelling
- Dehydration is a common trigger for gout attacks, so make sure you drink lots of water and avoid sugary drinks and alcohol.
- Eat gout-friendly foods. Avoid foods high in purines, such as red meat and seafood. Choose fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- If you experience a gout attack, elevate the joint above your heart as much as possible. This can help reduce swelling and pain.
- Applying ice to the joint for 20 minutes can reduce pain and inflammation.
- Avoid activities and sports that could trigger a gout attack.
Listening to your body and avoiding triggers that can cause gout symptoms whilst travelling is essential. Don't hesitate to seek medical treatment if necessary.
